Availability

We regret that we have no plots available to rent. We currently have 55 people (as of 11th December 2010) on our waiting list and normally let (on average) about 5 plots a year.

This means an estimated wait of approx. 11 years, depending on plot size and vacancies.

What can you do ?

Under the Small Holding and Allotments Act 1908 the council has a duty to provide sufficient land to satisfy the demand, when a minimum of six registered electors, residing in the area have written to the council asking for an allotment.

YOU NEED TO WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL COUNCILLOR !

What are we doing ?

We are actively discussing the problem of high demand with local council officers both directly and through the Federation of Bournemouth Allotment and Leisure Gardeners.

In anticipation of the growing demand for plots within our site, we have recently undertaken a plot resizing and renumbering operation.

Amongst many benefits it makes smaller plots for those just starting out, and splitting some of larger plots it enables those members who wish to downsize due to age or health restrictions (for example) to decide which part of their plot they want to give up, so they don't have to move to another part of the site in order to continue.

We always recommend anyone new to allotment gardening, or new to gardening entirely, that a small  plot is a good starting point as it is often the sudden realisation of how fast weeds grow during warm weather and the job of keeping on top of them that can lead to despair and abandonment of what could have been a very successful plot, if only it had been smaller.
